What the word counter measures

The word count is the figure most assignments, exams and publishers use. The character count, with and without spaces, is what social platforms, SMS and application forms limit. Sentences and paragraphs describe structure: long paragraphs are hard to scan, and sentences averaging thirty words are hard to read.

Words are runs of letters or numbers from any script, so English, Urdu and Roman Urdu all count correctly. Contractions such as "don't" and hyphenated terms such as "well-known" count as one word by default. How word count is calculated explains the full rules.

Reading and speaking time

Reading time uses an average silent-reading speed of 238 words per minute; speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace. See average reading speed and average speaking speed for the research.

When counters disagree

Microsoft Word, Google Docs and online tools treat symbols, hyphens and links slightly differently, so totals can differ by a few words. Compare how Microsoft Word counts words and how Google Docs counts words. If a university portal or exam system has its own counter, treat its figure as final.

Frequently asked questions

Is this word counter free to use?

Yes. Every counter, converter and utility on WordCounter.pk is free, with no sign-up and no word limit.

Can it count Urdu and Roman Urdu words?

Yes. The counter recognises Unicode Urdu script, Roman Urdu and mixed-language text. How to count words in Urdu explains the rules.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Analysis runs entirely in your browser. If autosave is on, a copy is kept only in your own browser storage.

What counts as one word?

A run of letters or numbers, with apostrophes and hyphens keeping a term together. See What counts as one word for the exact rules and the options to change them.

Does the character count include spaces?

The main figure includes spaces and line breaks, because most platform limits count every typed character. The "without spaces" figure is shown separately.

How does the writing goal work?

Choose Set goal, enter a target, and the progress bar shows how much is complete and how many words remain.
