# Do Numbers Count as Words?

> In nearly every word counter, a number counts as a word. “2026” is one word, “1,250” is one word and “3.14” is one word. If your limit excludes figures, you will need to remove them or use the option to skip numbers.

**Short answer:** Yes. A numeral with no spaces counts as one word in Microsoft Word, Google Docs and this counter. Numbers written as words, like “twenty-five”, count too.

## How different numbers are counted

| Written as | Counted as | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 2026 | 1 word | |
| 1,250,000 | 1 word | Commas between digits keep it together |
| 3.14 | 1 word | Decimal point |
| $50 | 1 word | Currency symbol attached |
| 50 % | 1 word + symbol | The lone % has no letter or digit |
| 15/10/2026 | 1 word | Slashes join the digits |
| ۲۰۲۶ (Urdu digits) | 1 word | Unicode digits count |
| twenty-five | 1 word | Hyphenated word |

## When numbers should be excluded

Some assignments exclude tables, equations or data from the limit, and numbers in a table are not part of the running prose. Others exclude citations such as (Smith, 2020), where the year is a number. When the brief is silent, count everything in the body text. Use the **Skip numbers** option on the main counter to see the word count without numeric tokens, and compare it with the standard figure.

## Digits versus numbers

There is a difference between counting numbers as words and counting digits as characters. The [Digit Counter](https://wordcounter.pk/digit-counter/) reports how many digit characters a text has, so “1,250” contributes four digits but only one word. Character-based limits, such as those on [SMS](https://wordcounter.pk/sms-character-counter/) and social posts, count every digit.

## Style: numerals or words?

Writing numbers as words, “twelve” instead of 12, does not change the word count of that figure, since both are one word, except for compound numbers such as “twenty-one” where hyphen rules apply. Style guides usually spell out numbers under ten or one hundred in prose. Choose based on your style guide, not on the word count.
