# Does Word Count Affect SEO?

> Word count is not a ranking factor. Google’s representatives have said so repeatedly. But long, thorough pages often rank well for competitive queries because depth is how they satisfy searchers. Length is a result of completeness, not a goal.

**Short answer:** No. Google does not rank pages by word count. Pages need to answer the search intent completely; for many topics that takes more words, but a short page can rank if it fully answers a simple query.

## What Google says

Google has stated in guidance and in public statements by its Search representatives that there is no ideal word count and no minimum, and that quantity is not a ranking signal. Its helpful-content guidance asks whether a page provides a substantial, complete or comprehensive description of the topic. “Substantial” is about information, not length.

## Why long pages correlate with rankings

Studies of top results often find that the average word count of first-page results is well above 1,000. There are reasons other than length itself. Competitive queries are broad and need more coverage; long pages attract more links; they match more related queries; and teams that invest in long content tend to invest in quality overall. Correlation does not mean adding words will raise rankings.

## Choosing length by search intent

| Intent | Example query | Best length |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Quick answer | how many characters in a tweet | Short; answer in the first lines |
| Tool or calculator | word counter | Tool first; 300–1,200 words of explanation |
| Definition | what is keyword density | 600–1,200 words |
| Comparison or guide | word count vs character count | 1,000–2,000 words |
| Comprehensive overview | everything about word count | 2,000+ words, with sections |

## Thin content and padding

Thin content is content that adds little value, such as boilerplate, doorway pages, scraped text or near-duplicate pages. Padding a thin page with fluff is not a fix; adding useful information is. If a section has 40 words under a heading that deserves a full answer, expand it. If a page repeats itself, cut it. ## A practical approach

Look at the pages that rank for your query and list the subtopics they cover. Cover those, plus what they miss. Then measure the result with the [Blog Word Counter](https://wordcounter.pk/blog-word-counter/) and readability with the [Readability Checker](https://wordcounter.pk/readability-checker/). Keyword density is a similar over-simplified metric; see [What Is Keyword Density?](https://wordcounter.pk/guides/what-is-keyword-density/).
