# What Is Keyword Density?

> Keyword density is the number of times a keyword appears in a text, as a percentage of the total words. It is a simple editorial measure of repetition, not a ranking formula, and no search engine has published an ideal figure.

**Short answer:** Keyword density = (occurrences × words in the phrase) ÷ total words × 100. There is no ideal percentage; use it only to spot over-repetition.

## The formula

If your target keyword is “word counter” (two words), it appears 12 times and the page has 1,500 words, the density is 12 × 2 ÷ 1,500 = 1.6 percent. For a single-word keyword the number of words in the phrase is one. The [Keyword Density Checker](https://wordcounter.pk/keyword-density-checker/) does the calculation and lists your other top terms.

## Is there an ideal keyword density?

No. Recommendations of 1 to 3 percent circulate widely, but they are rules of thumb with no basis in published search-engine guidance. Modern search engines understand synonyms, related terms and the meaning of a passage, so a page about word counters that uses “character counter”, “text length” and “writing tool” naturally is well understood without exact repetition. Over-repeating a phrase makes writing worse and can look like stuffing.

## How to use the metric well

- Use it as a safety check, not a goal. A density above about 3 percent usually means the text repeats itself.
- Check that the main phrase appears in the title, the H1, the introduction and where natural.
- Look at related terms with the [N-gram Analyzer](https://wordcounter.pk/ngram-analyzer/); coverage of related concepts matters more.
- Read the page aloud; if the phrase grates, vary it.

## Related concepts

Term frequency–inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) weighs how distinctive a term is across a collection, but it is also a simplification. Search engines use far more signals, including entities, links, user behaviour and quality evaluation. See [Does Word Count Affect SEO?](https://wordcounter.pk/guides/does-word-count-affect-seo/) for the related question about length.

## In other languages

The calculation is the same for Urdu, but a large share of Urdu text consists of function words, so densities look lower; use the [Urdu Keyword Density Checker](https://wordcounter.pk/urdu-keyword-density-checker/) and judge by naturalness. The [Word Frequency Counter](https://wordcounter.pk/word-frequency-counter/) gives you the full picture of which words dominate.
