# Hashtag Counter > Count how many #hashtags and @mentions your post contains, together with its character and word totals. Check a caption against platform limits and best-practice guidance before you publish. - URL: https://wordcounter.pk/hashtag-counter/ - Type: Interactive tool (runs in the browser; nothing is uploaded) - Updated: 2026-10-15 ## How to use the hashtag counter 1. Paste your caption or post. 2. Read the hashtag and mention counts. 3. Compare with the platform allowance: Instagram permits up to 30 hashtags per post. 4. Trim to the few that are truly relevant; two to five targeted tags often work better than a long list. ## What the counter recognises A hashtag is a # followed by letters, numbers or underscores, at the start of the text or after a space. A mention is the same with @. URLs and the number of emoji are shown too, since they all use up caption space. Urdu hashtags in Arabic script are recognised as well. Hashtags are part of the character total on every platform, so a long block of tags can crowd out the message. See [Instagram Caption Counter](https://wordcounter.pk/instagram-caption-counter/) for how Instagram’s 2,200-character caption and 30-hashtag limit interact. ## How many hashtags to use Platform guidance changes, but the trend is toward fewer, more specific tags. Instagram caps captions at 30 hashtags; LinkedIn and X work best with one to three; TikTok captions are short enough that a handful of tags is plenty. Use readable CamelCase for multi-word tags, such as #WordCounter, which screen readers pronounce correctly. The [social counters](https://wordcounter.pk/tools/social-counters/) hub has a limit-aware counter for each platform. ## Frequently asked questions ### What is the Instagram hashtag limit? 30 hashtags per post or story. ### Do hashtags count toward the character limit?
