## What a word counter measures

A word counter reads a block of text and reports its size in units people actually need: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences and paragraphs. Those totals decide whether an essay meets a requirement, a caption fits a platform, a script fits a time slot, or a web page covers its topic in enough depth. This page is the main word counter of WordCounter.pk and the centre of the tools around it.

The counter on this page is Unicode-aware. It identifies words as runs of letters and numbers from any script, so English, Urdu, Roman Urdu and mixed-language drafts all count correctly. Contractions like “don’t” and hyphenated terms like “well-known” are single words by default, and two checkboxes let you change how hyphens and numbers are treated to match a specific rulebook. The full logic is documented in [How Word Count Is Calculated](https://wordcounter.pk/guides/how-word-count-is-calculated/).

## Word, character and sentence counts explained

The word count is the number most assignments use. The character count, with and without spaces, is what social platforms, SMS gateways and application forms use; see the dedicated [Character Counter](https://wordcounter.pk/character-counter/) for that. Sentences and paragraphs describe structure: a long document with very few paragraphs is hard to scan, and sentences averaging thirty words are hard to read. The [Sentence Counter](https://wordcounter.pk/sentence-counter/) and [Paragraph Counter](https://wordcounter.pk/paragraph-counter/) isolate those measurements.

Reading time divides the word count by an average adult silent-reading speed of 238 words per minute, while speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace. Both are planning estimates; see [How Reading Time Is Calculated](https://wordcounter.pk/guides/how-reading-time-is-calculated/) for the research and the [Reading Time Calculator](https://wordcounter.pk/reading-time-calculator/) and [Speaking Time Calculator](https://wordcounter.pk/speaking-time-calculator/) to change the pace.

## Who uses it, and for what

- **Students and exam candidates** check essays against limits with presets such as the [Essay Word Counter](https://wordcounter.pk/essay-word-counter/), [IELTS Task 2 Word Counter](https://wordcounter.pk/ielts-task-2-word-counter/) and [CSS Essay Word Counter](https://wordcounter.pk/css-essay-word-counter/).
- **Urdu writers and journalists** paste right-to-left text into the [Urdu Word Counter](https://wordcounter.pk/urdu-word-counter/) or use the [Roman Urdu Word Counter](https://wordcounter.pk/roman-urdu-word-counter/) for Latin-script Urdu.
- **Social media teams** stay inside platform limits with the [X (Twitter) Character Counter](https://wordcounter.pk/x-twitter-character-counter/), [Instagram Caption Counter](https://wordcounter.pk/instagram-caption-counter/) and [LinkedIn Character Counter](https://wordcounter.pk/linkedin-character-counter/).
- **SEO and content teams** shape snippets with the [Meta Description Length Checker](https://wordcounter.pk/meta-description-length-checker/) and review phrases with the [N-gram Analyzer](https://wordcounter.pk/ngram-analyzer/).
- **Speakers and video creators** convert scripts to minutes with [Words to Speaking Time Converter](https://wordcounter.pk/words-to-speaking-time/).

## How to use the word counter

- Type or paste into the editor. Counts update with every keystroke.
- Read the headline totals, then the live analysis panel for sentences, paragraphs, reading time and unique words.
- Choose **Set goal** to track a target length, or tick the hyphen and number options to match your institution’s rules.
- Edit with the case menu, undo and redo, then copy the text or save it as a .txt file.

## Private by design

Nothing you type is sent to a server. The analysis runs in your browser, and the optional autosave stores your draft only in that browser’s local storage so it is still there when you return. Turn autosave off in the toolbar on a shared computer. Because the page is a static site with no accounts, there is nothing to sign up for and nothing to leak.

## When this counter and another program disagree

Different software applies slightly different rules to apostrophes, hyphens, symbols and web addresses, so two counters can differ by a few words in a long document. Microsoft Word, Google Docs and browser tools each have their own conventions, compared in [How Microsoft Word Counts Words](https://wordcounter.pk/guides/how-microsoft-word-counts-words/) and [How Google Docs Counts Words](https://wordcounter.pk/guides/how-google-docs-counts-words/). When you are submitting to a system with an official counter, such as a university portal or exam platform, that figure is authoritative. Use ours to plan and edit, and theirs to confirm.

## Go beyond the word count

Once you have the total, move to the tool that fits the next question: the [Words to Pages Converter](https://wordcounter.pk/words-to-pages/) converter for page length, the [SERP Snippet Preview](https://wordcounter.pk/serp-snippet-preview/) for search results, the [Case Converter](https://wordcounter.pk/case-converter/) to fix capitalisation, or the [Typing Speed Test](https://wordcounter.pk/typing-speed-test/) to measure how quickly you write. Browse all [counting tools](https://wordcounter.pk/tools/counting-tools/), [social counters](https://wordcounter.pk/tools/social-counters/), [academic tools](https://wordcounter.pk/tools/academic-tools/) and [writing guides](https://wordcounter.pk/tools/writing-guides/) to see how the pieces fit together.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is WordCounter.pk free to use?

Yes. Every counter, converter and utility is free, with no sign-up and no word limit.

### Can it count Urdu words?

Yes. The counter recognises Unicode Urdu script, Roman Urdu and mixed-language text. For right-to-left editing, use the dedicated [Urdu Word Counter](https://wordcounter.pk/urdu-word-counter/).

### Is my document uploaded?

No. Analysis runs entirely in your browser. If autosave is on, a copy is kept only in your own browser storage.

### What counts as one word?

A run of letters or numbers, with apostrophes and hyphens keeping a term together. See [What Counts as One Word](https://wordcounter.pk/guides/what-counts-as-one-word/) for the exact rules and the options to change them.

### Does the character count include spaces?

The main figure includes spaces and line breaks, because most platform limits count every typed character. The “without spaces” figure is shown separately.

### How does the writing goal work?

Choose Set goal, enter a target, and the progress bar shows how much is complete and how many words remain.
