Why it’s only an estimate
Average word length varies with subject, register and language. Legal and scientific texts have longer words and fewer per character; children’s writing has shorter ones. A character-to-word estimate is accurate within about ten percent for ordinary prose, which is fine for planning but not for submission. See Word Count vs Character Count for the full comparison, and use Words to Characters Converter for the reverse calculation.
