How to use the emoji counter

  1. Paste your post or caption with emoji.
  2. Read the emoji count.
  3. Compare the character and byte figures: emoji use more bytes than letters.
  4. Check limits for your platform on the relevant social counter.

How emoji are counted

The counter finds Unicode pictographic characters, which covers faces, hands, objects, flags’ component symbols and more. Complex emoji built from several code points joined together, like a family or a person with a skin tone, may be counted as more than one pictograph. This is a close measure for casual use; platforms apply their own rules.

On X, for example, most emoji count as two characters toward the 280 limit, and SMS switches the whole message to Unicode, shrinking each part to 70 characters. The X (Twitter) Character Counter and SMS Character Counter apply those rules.

Emoji in marketing and captions

Emoji can raise attention in short posts but can also hurt accessibility, since screen readers announce each one by name. A line with five consecutive emoji is read as five phrases. Keep them to a few per post and place them at the end of sentences rather than between words. When emoji take up part of a limited caption, the Instagram Caption Counter shows the combined length.
