How to use the character counter

  1. Type or paste your text into the editor. The two large figures show characters with spaces and without.
  2. Read the side panel for letters, digits, punctuation, spaces and byte size.
  3. Use Set goal to track a limit such as 160, 280 or 2,200 characters and watch the bar fill.
  4. Trim the text until the bar stays below your limit, then copy it out.

What counts as a character

A character is any single typed symbol: a letter, digit, space, punctuation mark or emoji. This counter measures Unicode code points, which is the figure most editors display. Spaces and line breaks are included in the main total because platforms such as SMS gateways, X and application portals count every typed character, not just the visible ones.

“Without spaces” removes every whitespace character, including tabs and line breaks. It is useful for compact-length rules, for estimating typing effort and for languages where spacing is not a good proxy for length. The difference between the two numbers also tells you roughly how many words you have, which is why a word count and a character count are never interchangeable.

Who needs a character counter

  • Social media managers checking posts against limits on X, Instagram or LinkedIn; see the social counters hub.
  • SEO writers shortening titles and descriptions, then verifying them with the Meta Title Length Checker.
  • Form fillers working with portals that cap a field at, say, 500 characters.
  • SMS marketers who need to know when a message splits into extra parts; try the SMS Character Counter.
  • Developers and designers sizing database fields, labels and button text.

Characters, bytes and emoji

A character and a byte are not the same thing. English letters take one byte in UTF-8, Urdu letters usually take two, and most emoji take four. If a system limits storage in bytes rather than characters, use the Byte Counter. Emoji are also counted differently by different platforms: some treat a single emoji as two characters. The Emoji Counter shows how many you have used.

Frequently asked questions

Does the character count include spaces?

The large left figure does. A second figure shows characters without spaces so you can use whichever your rule specifies.

Why does my character count differ on another site?

Some tools count UTF-16 code units, which counts emoji as two, and some count line breaks as two characters. This tool counts Unicode code points and treats a line break as one.

How many characters are in a tweet or SMS?

X allows 280 weighted characters and an SMS part holds 160 GSM characters or 70 Unicode characters. See Social Media Character Limits for every platform.

Can it count Urdu characters?

Yes. For right-to-left editing and Urdu-specific notes use the Urdu Character Counter.
