IELTS Writing Word Count Guide

IELTS sets minimum word counts, not maximums: 150 words for Task 1 and 250 words for Task 2. Writing below the minimum is penalised, and writing far above it brings risk without reward. This guide explains the rules and how to build a sense of length.

Updated

Short answer: Task 1 needs at least 150 words and Task 2 at least 250. Aim for about 170 to 190 and 270 to 320 respectively, in 20 and 40 minutes.

The official minimums

TaskMinimumSuggested timeWeight
Task 1 (Academic or General)150 words20 minutesOne third
Task 2 (essay)250 words40 minutesTwo thirds

The IELTS band descriptors assess task achievement or response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource and grammatical range and accuracy. Examiners penalise answers that are under length because they typically cannot address the task fully. Check the latest information on the official IELTS website, which is the authority.

Is there a maximum?

No official maximum exists, but time is limited, and a longer answer increases the chance of errors. Strong band 7 and 8 responses tend to sit at about 170 to 190 words for Task 1 and 270 to 320 for Task 2. Writing 400 words in Task 2 usually means you are sacrificing planning and checking time.

How to know you have enough without counting

In the exam you do not have to count every word, but you should have a feel for it. In practice, measure your handwriting: count the average words per line over several practice answers, and note how many lines you need for 150 and 250 words. In the computer-delivered test, the screen shows the word count automatically. Practise using the IELTS Task 1 Word Counter and IELTS Task 2 Word Counter to see the relationship between time and length.

What counts as a word in IELTS

Numbers, dates and abbreviations normally count as words. Contractions are counted as one word, though you should avoid them in formal writing. Hyphenated words are normally counted as one. Examiners do not usually count word-by-word; they estimate, and flag only clearly short scripts. See What Counts as One Word for standard rules.

Practice routine

Write under timed conditions, then paste the answer into the IELTS Writing Word Counter to measure length, paragraphs and sentence length. Compare Task 2 answers with the structure in the IELTS Task 2 Word Counter: introduction, two body paragraphs, conclusion. Review errors, not just length.
