How Many Words in an Essay?

The right essay length is whatever your assignment says. When there is no instruction, a school essay is 300 to 500 words, a high-school essay 500 to 1,000, and a university essay 1,500 to 3,000. This guide explains how lengths scale and how to plan them.

Updated

Short answer: A five-paragraph essay is about 500 words. School essays run 300 to 500 words, high-school essays 500 to 1,000 and university essays 1,500 to 3,000 or more.

A word budget for a five-paragraph essay

For 500 words: introduction 60, three body paragraphs of 125 each, conclusion 65. For 1,000 words, double each body paragraph or add more of them. The point of a budget is to ensure each argument gets equal weight and the conclusion is not an afterthought. Use the Words to Paragraphs Converter converter to plan the number of paragraphs for any total.

What the word limit counts

Most instructors count everything from the first word of the introduction to the last word of the conclusion, including in-text citations, headings and quotations. Titles, bibliographies and appendices are normally excluded. Some allow a margin of 10 percent. Read Does Word Count Include References and Citations? and check the assignment brief.

Quality over length

Teachers mark argument, evidence, structure and expression. Padding to reach a number lowers the quality, and cutting a strong point to meet a limit hurts the argument. If you are over, tighten language; if you are under, add depth. See the practical methods in How to Reduce Word Count and How to Increase Word Count.

Essays in special contexts

Competitive and admission essays have their own conventions: the Common App sets a 650-word maximum, IELTS Task 2 sets a 250-word minimum and CSS essay candidates practise at much greater length; see IELTS Writing Word Count Guide and CSS & PMS Essay Length Guide.
