How long should it be?
| Level / type | Typical length | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Common App personal essay | 250–650 words | 650 is a hard maximum in the portal |
| Short supplements | 50–250 words | School-specific |
| Why us / why this major | 100–400 words | |
| UC personal insight questions | 350 words each | Four of eight prompts |
Lengths here are common expectations, not rules. Your brief, supervisor or awarding body sets the real requirement, including what is excluded from the count.
The 650 limit is firm
The application form will not accept an essay beyond 650 words, and the portal’s count can differ slightly from a word processor’s. Aim for 600 to 640 so small differences do not trap you. Remove the title from your draft before counting, since it is not part of the essay.
Say something only you can say
Admissions readers look for voice and specificity. Open with a concrete scene, keep reflection to about a third of the essay and avoid summarising your CV. Review sentence length with the Sentence Counter. For longer statements, see the Personal Statement Word Counter.
