Lengths here are common expectations, not rules. Your brief, supervisor or awarding body sets the real requirement, including what is excluded from the count.

What counts toward the limit

The body of the essay, including quotations and headings, is almost always counted. Titles, reference lists, bibliographies and appendices are usually excluded, while footnotes and in-text citations vary; see Does Word Count Include References and Citations?. Most institutions allow a margin of plus or minus ten percent and penalise work that goes beyond it. When in doubt, ask.

The count here includes everything you type, so paste only the part that should be counted for a true figure.

Hitting the target without padding

If you are short, add evidence, an example or a counter-argument rather than filler. If you are over, cut repetition, signposting and sentences that restate the previous one.
