How to check your paragraph length
Paste your text into the Paragraph Counter to count paragraphs and divide the word count by the paragraph count. Anything over about 200 words in a web article, or 250 in an essay, is worth a second look. The Sentence Counter shows the average sentence length, which matters as much as the paragraph length for readability.
Too long or too short
Long paragraphs hide ideas and intimidate screen readers; split them where the topic shifts. Very short paragraphs, particularly a series of one-liners, can feel thin. In essays, a paragraph with fewer than three sentences often lacks the evidence or explanation that earns marks. See How Many Sentences in a Paragraph? for the sentence view.
Planning with paragraphs
If you know your word target, divide by the paragraph length to plan a structure: 1,000 words at 125 per paragraph is eight paragraphs. The Words to Paragraphs Converter and Paragraphs to Words Converter converters do the arithmetic for several styles.
